Location
Cooktown - the gateway to the wilderness - was founded in 1873 as the port for the Palmer River Goldfields. This was more than a century after Captain James Cook spent 48 days in 1770 on the banks of the Endeavour River repairing his ship.

Cooktown is located approximately 4 hours (350 km) from Cairns along the inland road which is completely sealed since March 2006 with the exception of 34 kms. For those with a 4WD the coastal road is 260 km.

Country Road Coachlines have scheduled services from Cairns and Port Douglas on both inland and coastal roads
By Plane
